What was important to the client?
The client wanted to make sure we designed around her priorities which included a decent pantry with a space specific for the microwave, and ample storage that was easy to access. In terms of the aesthetics, creating a timeless looking kitchen that wasn’t going to date was part of the brief.
Were there any difficulties to take into consideration?
This renovation required a compact design for a compact space, with the added constraint of a post that had to remain in the middle of the kitchen.
How did you solve them?
We were able to maximize bench space as well as storage space with careful consideration of the size of the appliances chosen, such as the Fisher and Paykel single dish drawer. Making choices like these opened up a lot of storage real estate for us. Inside the pantry we installed inner drawers, and a custom space for the microwave to fit within the pantry which made for a modern functional feel. Custom cabinetry for this style of kitchen was a must as it was an unusual shape and we wanted to make use of every inch of space available. To keep it modern, we created the cabinetry using Polytec Thermolaminate Style 1 Manchester with matching Melamine sheen ABS edge panels.
How does the design integrate into the wider environment?
The kitchen now feels more connected to the open plan living area. It is the first thing you see when you open the door of the apartment and although it is a really beautiful, eye-catching kitchen, as we used designer handles by Kethy in black olive as well as high quality sink and tapware by Abey in black pearl. These elements added a classy touch whilst the white cabinetry keeps it suitably timeless and understated, complimenting the rest of the space. The client was yet to choose her flooring material for the main living areas but the colour palette used in the kitchen gave her plenty of options to choose from.
